Challenge: A design team wanted to create a new interface for smartwatches. At the time, smartwatches were relatively new, no one was sure if customers would retain their initial excitement after purchase, and which functions might be useful over time. The goal of the project was to design a new communication method, related to heartbeats.
Process: A longitudinal study with 30 college students was conducted in the form of online diaries. Participants were followed over a 3 month period, and were required to report on various aspects of using their smartwatch for certain uses, and ways and frequency of communication with friends and family.
Outcome: Key initiatives around communication were uncovered, and used to create new app experiences and interfaces related to smartwatches.
My Role: I facilitated the project, designed research methods, stakeholder collaboration and monitored diary exercises.
